Building a Direct Mail Growth Channel
Sanctuary
Sanctuary had no investment in direct mail despite having a highly loyal customer base. The opportunity wasn't simply to add another marketing channel—it was to determine whether direct mail could become a profitable, scalable source of incremental revenue.
The Opportunity
As Sanctuary expanded its omnichannel marketing strategy, there was an opportunity to introduce direct mail as a meaningful growth channel.
The business needed to understand whether a tactile brand experience could strengthen customer retention, acquire new customers and generate incremental revenue—all while justifying future investment.
The challenge wasn't launching direct mail. It was proving its long-term business value.
The Idea
Rather than treating direct mail as a standalone tactic, I approached it as an extension of Sanctuary's broader brand ecosystem.
The strategy combined customer segmentation, creative storytelling and disciplined testing to determine where the channel could create the greatest incremental impact.
Instead of asking, "Can direct mail work?" we asked, "Where does direct mail create value that digital channels alone cannot?"
That shift in thinking informed everything from audience selection to creative development and measurement.
Bringing It to Life
I led the development of Sanctuary's direct mail strategy from concept through execution.
The program launched with a monthly postcard series targeting both existing customers and high-value prospect audiences, supported by testing plans that evaluated audience composition, offer strategy, creative direction and response.
Every mailer was designed to feel like an extension of the brand experience—not simply another promotional piece—while complementing the broader marketing calendar across ecommerce, email and paid media.
As performance data emerged, the strategy evolved to prioritize the highest-performing customer segments and build the business case for expanding into larger-format seasonal mailings, including a premium holiday gatefold.
The Impact
The pilot quickly demonstrated that direct mail could become a profitable and scalable growth channel.
Results included:
3.48x ROAS across completed mailings
$348K+ in attributed revenue on approximately $100K in spend
Nearly $190K in incremental revenue
15.1x ROAS among existing customers
10.5% response rate from retained customer audiences
Profitable prospect acquisition at 1.33x ROAS
More importantly, the program transformed direct mail from an untested opportunity into a repeatable marketing channel with a clear role within Sanctuary's omnichannel strategy.
Looking Back
The most valuable growth opportunities aren't always new channels—they're often overlooked ones.
When every marketing investment is evaluated through the lens of customer behavior rather than convention, established channels can become powerful drivers of incremental growth.
For Sanctuary, direct mail wasn't simply another campaign. It became another way to strengthen customer relationships while expanding the brand's revenue ecosystem.
